π It’s the 1-Year Anniversary of GoblinCandy.com! π
Well… sort of. The website had a brief run about 2 years ago, but back then, it was mostly filled with cringe-worthy recipes and blog entries. I was posting at a ridiculous pace and eventually got burnt out. But last year, I brought the site back to life, Dr. Frankenstein style, and we’ve been off to the races ever since!
To celebrate this special occasion, I wanted to do something big. And since we’re still in the middle of summer, what better way to pay tribute than to one of my favorite childhood memories: the ice cream truck! There are so many ice cream bars to pick from, everything from Fat Frog to WWF Ice Cream Bars. But because we’re into the macabre around here, let’s look at more spookier selections the ice cream truck has to offer!
Space Face (1999)
I was way too old to be chasing after the ice cream truck in '99, but I have to say, if we had an ice cream truck in our neighborhood in the late 90s and I saw that creepy alien staring at me, I would’ve pushed my way to the front of the line to get one.
Blue Bunny’s “Space Face” bar featured a green alien design very reminiscent of the grays that peered in our windows at night after we watched an episode of Sightings. It includes a “Giant Gumball” and “Slime Eyes,” which I’m guessing were made of a gelatin-like material or some sort of alien goo. If you look online, you can see a purple version of this sticker that says each package also comes with a temporary tattoo. Getting an extra prize with your creepy alien ice cream bar is awesome!
I love those little extra bonuses!
Here’s the thing about Good Humor’s Ghoulie ice cream bar. I don’t know if it’s a real ice cream bar! Never had or seen one in '95. I can only find two images of it online, one being from the homies Grimey & Derek from the Left Over Pizza Podcast and an eBay listing that has zero information other than how you can order this sticker. (which is what I did to post it here.)
For the sake of this post, let’s say this is a legit ice cream bar. How cool is this design? Bonus points for it being bubblegum flavored. What other character bar has a ‘spooky, see-through hole’ where a gumball eye would be? Can you imagine if Ghoulie was released today? Social media would go bananas! If anyone has more info or memories of Ghoulie, drop a comment!
Dracula (Late 70s or early 80s?)
From what I found in my research, Wall’s Dracula ice lolly was an ice cream bar from the 70s or 80s in the UK. This bar was in the shape of Dracula himself, in all his blood-red colored glory. How can you not fall in love with this? I can totally see eating one of these on a hot summer afternoon sitting in front of the TV watching Count Duckula or something.
Speaking of old cartoons, If you search on YouTube, you can find some commercials for this ice lolly with great animation that feels very comforting. You know, like when you watch an old cartoon from when you were little, and everything feels right with the world?
BONUS: The Fruity Yummy Mummy Bar (????)
For the bonus entry, I thought it would be fun to come up with a completely new ice cream bar that I wish really existed. Immediately, my mind went to the monster cereals, and who better to represent the monsters in ice cream form than Fruity Yummy Mummy! This would be a collab with Popsicle since they have a variety of character bars out now.
I’d imagine the Fruity Yummy Mummy bar to be some sort of mixed fruit flavor, but I can also see it being a delicious orange cream with piercing white gum ball or marshmallow eyes. This could pave the way for the other monsters to get in on the action. A chocolate Count Chocula bar? C’mon! We can even put Carmella Creeper in there as well. Maybe her's is a neon green, apple flavor with a creamy caramel center?
I hope you enjoyed a look at some frightfully frozen treats from the ice cream truck (or should I say ice scream truck!). If you hear that magical music off in the distance, grab a few bucks and treat yourself to an ice cream bar, no matter how old you are. You deserve it! Stay cool out there, and remember …
Stay Spooky
Jeremy
